How do we get rid of Mana?
Idea 1: System 6 style
Normal powers, you roll your dice, stuff happens, the end. Infinite magic (within reason).
When you want to try metamagic (or Big Magic), you have to roll some sort of skill check, and, on failure, you suffer Strain.
Potential issues:
- Infinite magic might throw off balance
- need to design all powers around this system: baseline uses are minimal, with more power requiring risk of strain
Idea 2: PbtA
Use PbtA-style rolls.
- Perfect success: no cost.
- Mixed success: choose mishap, strain, diminished effect, etc.
- Failure: mishap and strain.
